Checklist: what an effective website should have

Not all web pages are the same. There are websites that look good but don't convert. There are websites that convert but do not rank in Google. And there are websites that do everything well. What differentiates one from the other? A series of key elements that, when combined correctly, transform a website into a real business tool. This is the definitive checklist for 2026.

1. Clear value proposition on the cover

The visitor who comes to your website has 5 seconds to understand what you do, who you do it for and why they should stay. If your cover doesn't answer those three questions right away, most people leave. The value proposition must be in the first visible block, without scrolling, with large and clear text.

2. Responsive design (adapted to mobile)

We already mentioned it in the common mistakes article, but it is worth repeating: if your website does not look good on a cell phone, you are losing 65% of your potential visitors on Uruguay. Responsive design is not optional in 2026: it is a minimum requirement.

3. Optimized loading speed

An effective website loads in less than 3 seconds. This requires optimized images, good hosting, clean code, and optionally a CDN (Content Delivery Network) to deliver content faster. Speed is also a positioning factor in Google.

4. Intuitive navigation

The menu should be simple and direct. Maximum 5-7 options in the main menu. The user must be able to find what they are looking for in 2 clicks or less. Complex menus with nested submenus create confusion and increase abandonment rates.

5. Well-placed calls to action (CTAs)

Every page should have at least one clear CTA: a button that says exactly what will happen when the user clicks. "Request a quote", "Contact by WhatsApp", "See services". CTAs should stand out visually and be repeated at different points on the page, especially at the end.

6. Visible contact information

Telephone, email, WhatsApp, physical address (if applicable): all this information must be easily accessible. Ideally, it should appear in both the header and footer and on the contact page. The visitor should not have to look for how to communicate with you.

7. "About us" or "Who we are" section

People buy from people. Showing who is behind the business, what the mission is, how long they have been in the field or what differentiates them humanizes the brand and generates trust. A real photo of the team or founder can make a significant difference in conversions.

8. Social proof: testimonials and success stories

Testimonials from real customers are one of the most powerful elements for converting visitors into customers. They don't have to be long: a specific sentence from a real client, with a name and if possible a photo, is worth a thousand words of self-introduction.

9. SSL Certificate (HTTPS)

The green padlock (HTTPS) in the address bar is not just a security issue: it is a sign of trust for the user and a ranking factor for Google. A website without SSL appears as "not secure" in browsers, immediately turning visitors away.

10. Basic SEO well implemented

Each page should have a unique meta title, an attractive meta description, a clean URL, and content that answers your audience's searches. Without SEO, your website exists but no one can find it. With SEO done right, Google starts sending you organic traffic for free and sustained.

"A website that does not appear on Google is like a store without a sign: it exists, but no one can find it."
