What is hosting? How to choose the right web hosting

What is web hosting and how to choose it

If the domain is the address of your website, the hosting is the land where it is built. Without a hosting server, your files have nowhere to live and your website cannot be available to visitors. Choosing the right hosting directly influences the speed of your site, its availability and its security.

What is hosting exactly?

Hosting (or web hosting) is a service that provides you with space on a server permanently connected to the Internet. All the files of your website are saved on that server: the HTML, the images, the styles, the scripts, the database. When someone visits your website, the server sends those files to the visitor's browser.

Types of hosting: which one to choose

Shared Hosting (Shared Hosting)

Your website shares resources on a server with hundreds of other sites. It's the cheapest option (from $3-10/month) and enough for most small business websites. The downside is that if another site on the same server has a traffic spike, it can affect the performance of yours.

VPS (Virtual Private Server)

A physical server divided into virtual machines. Each VPS has guaranteed resources (RAM, CPU, storage) that it does not share with others. It is more stable and customizable than shared hosting, with prices starting at USD 15-50/month. Ideal for sites with moderate-high traffic or web applications.

Cloud Hosting (Cloud Hosting)

Your website resources are distributed across multiple servers. If one fails, the others automatically compensate. It offers high availability and scales according to demand. Providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Cloudflare Pages are leaders in this space. It is the most robust option for serious projects.

dedicated server

A complete physical server for your exclusive use. Maximum performance and control, but also the highest cost ($80-300/month). It only makes sense for sites with very high traffic or very specific technical requirements.

"For most businesses on Uruguay, good shared or basic cloud hosting is more than enough to get started."

What to take into account when choosing hosting

And static hosting?

For static websites (like this blog), a very efficient alternative is static hosting on platforms such as Cloudflare Pages, Netlify or GitHub Pages. They are free or very low cost, globally distributed (which guarantees speed anywhere in the world) and extremely secure as they do not have a database or PHP. It is the solution we use at MSK Estudio Web for the sites we develop.
