"And what domain do you have?" It is one of the first questions when someone wants to launch their website. The domain is the address of your site on the Internet: what people type to find you. Choosing it well is a strategic decision that has an impact on your brand, your credibility and even your positioning on Google.
A domain is the unique name that identifies your website on the Internet. For example, in msk.com.uy, the full domain is "msk.com.uy". Technically, this name is translated to an IP address (something like 192.168.1.1) using the Domain Name System (DNS) system, which works like the Internet's phone book.
Without your own domain, your website would be at an unprofessional address such as "yourcompany.wordpress.com" or similar, which generates distrust and makes it difficult for you to be remembered. A domain name is a fundamental part of the digital identity of any business.
A domain has two main parts:
Domain Name (SLD): the part that you choose, for example "msk" in msk.com.uy. It should be unique, memorable and relevant to your business.
Extension or TLD (Top Level Domain): the final part, such as.com,.uy,.com.uy,.org, etc. Indicates the type of site or country of origin.
For businesses in Uruguay, the most common options are:
.com.uy: the most used and recognized for Uruguayan companies. Gives immediate local credibility and helps SEO in searches from Uruguay.
.oops: shorter and more modern. Available since 2012, it is a valid but less consolidated option than.com.uy.
.com: the most well-known global extension. Good option if your business has or aspires to have international reach.
.org/.net– Usually for nonprofit organizations or specific projects. For businesses, they are not the first options.
"If your business is Uruguayan and serves mainly in Uruguay,.com.uy is your best first option."
Make it short and memorable: the shorter, the easier to remember, to write and to share verbally. Less than 15 characters is ideal.
Make it easy to pronounce and spell: If you have to explain how to spell it every time you say it, that's a bad sign.
Avoid hyphens and numbers: they generate confusion and are difficult to communicate verbally.
Reflect your brand or your field: Ideally, the name is your brand or includes words related to your activity.
Check that it is available on social networks: The ideal is to have the same name on your website and on your social profiles.
Check if there are similar registered trademarks: Using a domain that is too similar to that of a well-known company can cause legal problems.
.com.uy domains are registered through SeCIU (Central University Computing Service) and have an approximate cost of 350-450 Uruguayan pesos per year (varies depending on the registrar). International.com domains cost around $10-15 per year at registrars like Namecheap or GoDaddy. It is a minimal investment compared to the value it has for your business.
