The colors of your website are not just an aesthetic issue: they are pure communication. Before the user reads a single word, the colors already convey whether your brand is serious, modern, friendly or trustworthy. Choosing the wrong color palette can cause a visitor to leave your site in seconds without knowing exactly why. Choosing it well can significantly increase conversions.
Each color generates emotional associations in people. These associations are not universal (they vary depending on culture and context), but in the Western and Latin American world there are fairly established patterns:
Blue: trust, professionalism, technology, security. The color most used by banks, tech companies and service providers.
Green: nature, health, tranquility, growth. Ideal for green products, health, wellness, finances (money).
Red: urgency, energy, passion, danger. Very effective for CTAs (action buttons), offers and discounts.
Black: elegance, luxury, sophistication, power. Used by premium and fashion brands.
orange and yellow: optimism, energy, creativity, accessibility. They attract attention and communicate openness.
Violet/purple: creativity, mystery, luxury, spirituality. Widely used in technology, innovation and disruptive brands.
This rule, taken from interior design and applied to graphic and web design, proposes that a well-balanced color palette should be distributed like this: 60% of the visual space with the dominant color (usually the background), the 30% with the secondary color (sections, cards, structure elements) and the 10% with the accent color (buttons, highlights, links). More than three main colors creates visual chaos.
"The correct color is not the one you like the most, but the one that best communicates to your audience and reinforces your value proposition."
The most frequent mistake I see on Uruguayan business websites is the low contrast between the text and the background. Light gray text on a white background, or yellow text on a green background: pretty perhaps, but illegible. The WCAG (Web Accessibility Guidelines) recommends a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text. You can check it with free tools like WebAIM Contrast Checker.
Professional services: dark blue + white + gray. Transmits seriousness and confidence.
Tech and startups: black or dark gray + green or cyan + violet. Transmits innovation and modernity.
Health and well-being: soft green + white + light blue. Transmits calm, health and confidence.
Gastronomy: orange or red + black or dark brown. Stimulates appetite and energy.
Fashion and luxury: black + gold + white. Timeless elegance.
In 2026, more than 80% of mobile users use dark mode. If your site is designed only for a white background, you may be generating low-quality experiences for the majority of your audience. Modern websites implement support for both modes or directly choose a dark design as a base, which also consumes less battery on OLED screens and is perceived as more modern.
